KARD’s Daring Return: A Deep Dive Into ‘Drift’

South Korea’s trailblazing co-ed K-pop group KARD makes a bold comeback with their highly anticipated third mini-album, “Drift,” which dropped on June 2 at 6 PM KST. Known for breaking the mold of traditional K-pop formats, KARD once again embraces a wild and adventurous concept, unveiling sizzling concept photos that showcase each member’s unique charisma and edgy visual identity. Fans worldwide have eagerly awaited this release following the success of their seventh mini-album, “Where To Now? (Part.1 : Yellow Light),” which debuted last August.

Since their official debut in 2017, KARD has earned a reputation as one of K-pop’s most innovative acts. The group’s co-ed lineup—comprised of members J.Seph, BM, Somin, and Jiwoo—challenged industry norms from the outset by combining masculine and feminine energies in their music and visuals. With each comeback, KARD has not only delivered chart-topping hits but also pushed creative boundaries, offering fresh sounds and daring aesthetics.

“Drift” marks KARD’s first release in nearly a year, following “Where To Now? (Part.1 : Yellow Light),” which explored themes of self-discovery and the crossroads faced by young adults. In contrast, “Drift” takes listeners on a high-octane journey through uncharted territories—both musically and conceptually—emphasizing themes of freedom, exploration, and the exhilaration that comes with venturing beyond one’s limits.

In the concept photos unveiled ahead of the album release, each member channels a distinct persona reflecting the album’s overarching theme of rebellion and movement:

• J.Seph adopts a rugged, nomadic look—his tousled hair and leather-accented outfit evoke images of a lone wanderer traversing vast landscapes. His intense gaze suggests a man accustomed to facing uncertainty head-on.

• BM appears as a fearless provocateur, donning bold tattoos and a statement harness that underscores his fearless commitment to authenticity. His posture and expression radiate confidence, hinting at the album’s unapologetic energy.

• Somin transforms into a desert fox of sorts, with wind-swept hair, a weathered utility jacket, and a piercing stare that conveys both resilience and curiosity.

• Jiwoo channels a sleek, high-speed chase vibe—her streamlined attire, slicked-back hair, and smoldering gaze give off the aura of a renegade on the run.

Together, these images form a cohesive narrative of motion and transformation, visually representing the album title, “Drift.” The styling—earthy tones mixed with metallic accents—evokes both the rawness of the natural world and the futuristic sheen of a cyberpunk-influenced landscape.

“Drift” comprises five tracks that traverse an eclectic mix of genres while maintaining a cohesive sonic identity:

1. Betcha

2. Touch (Title Track)

3. Before We Go

4. Top Down

5. Pivot

A pulsating introduction to the album, “Betcha” combines syncopated percussion with atmospheric synths to build tension. The lyrics play on double meanings of trust and risk, setting the tone for the emotional highs and lows that follow.

As the centerpiece of “Drift,” “Touch” blends a driving bassline with dynamic brass stabs and layered vocal harmonies. Its chorus—featuring anthemic chants—invites listeners to abandon caution and embrace the rush of fleeting moments. The accompanying music video is expected to expand on the album’s visual motifs, incorporating high-speed chases, desert backdrops, and luminous neon accents.

A mid-tempo track that balances introspection with momentum, “Before We Go” reflects on farewells and the desire to leave a lasting imprint on someone’s memory. Warm guitar riffs contrast against chilly electronic flourishes, symbolizing the bittersweet nature of departure.

“Top Down” is an upbeat, party-ready anthem highlighting freedom and jubilation. Crisp percussion and a funky guitar hook drive the track forward, while the members’ rap verses inject playful energy into the mix.

Closing the album on a contemplative note, “Pivot” features minimalistic production—soft piano chords and sighing synth pads underpin delicate vocals. Lyrically, it speaks to moments of choice when one must change direction, literally or figuratively.
